Asleep Sleep Report 2023 : Everyone’s Sleep
|by Asleep
We go to sleep every night. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to sleep. However, we can look at different factors that influence the quality of sleep and find ways to get a good night's sleep.
Are we getting healthy sleep at the moment? Why is it so hard to get out of bed on Mondays? Asleep has recently published a report that allows us to analyze our sleep with specific data. Let's have a detailed look at the recent sleep report.
What do you mean by 'good sleep'? As we all have different lifestyles and sleep habits, the criteria for 'good sleep' may vary. It is therefore necessary to consider both subjective and objective factors when defining 'good sleep'.
Asleep has recently published the Asleep Sleep Report 2023: Everyone's Sleep, which analyzes sleep data obtained through Asleep’s unique AI algorithm. Based on the extensive data collected in Asleep's system, variations in sleep patterns were analyzed according to weekdays, weekends and age groups.
📍This report inspects changing sleep patterns by analyzing about 3.9 million hours of sleep data collected through Asleep's unique AI algorithm from January 1, 2023 to November 17, 2023.
📍To examine the sleep pattern differences on weekdays and weekends, and by age, a detailed analysis was performed. The sleep data used were collected from 1,288 Korean men and women aged between 20s and 60s.
Did you all sleep well this year?
Asleep’s AI data supported the overall lack of sleep in general Korean population. The average daily sleep duration was just 4 hours and 39 minutes. This was two hours less than the average amount of sleep recommended by the National Sleep Foundation(NSF) for healthy adults (about 7 hours).
Korean adults were making up for the lack of sleep over weekends. By analyzing data collected from 1,288 Sleep Routine app users, this report found that the weekend sleep duration was 21 minutes longer than weekdays. Total time spent in bed also increased on weekends, as did the total sleep time. The app users spent weekends to relax in bed.
Sleep patterns were also different between weekdays and weekends. Korean adults were getting more REM sleep over the weekends as the total sleep duration was longer. REM sleep is important for memory consolidation, cognitive function and emotional regulation.
South Koreans sleep less and work more
The irregular sleep pattern observed in this report is common across Asian countries. According to a recent study published in the Sleep Medicine journal, most Asian countries sleep less compared to other regions, with South Korea and Japan leading the way.
This study suggests significant differences in sociocultural perception of work and rest. South Koreans work about 200 hours longer per year than the OECD average. Lack of sleep caused by long working hours is being compensated by longer sleeping duration over the weekends. Not having a regular sleep routine may have negative consequences for both individual and society. Chronically fatigued society may adversely affect individual health and cause inefficiency. According to a US Gallup survey on 'Sleep Deprivation and Productivity,’ the estimated productivity loss due to sleep deprivation was almost $44.6 billion per year.

#Monday blues
Have you ever experienced extreme fatigue, especially on Mondays, as you start a new week? This common phenomenon, often referred to as the ‘Monday blues’, happens as your body readjusts its circadian rhythm. Monday blues is proven by the data analyzed by Asleep for this report.
People slept about 30 minutes less on Mondays than on Sundays. The overall quality of sleep, also known as Sleep Efficiency(SE)*, also declined. On Mondays, it took the longest time to fall asleep compared to other days. Also, there was a tendency to wake up more often even after falling asleep.
*Sleep Efficiency(SE) is calculated by Total Sleep Time(TST) / Time In Bed(TIB) x 100, and 85% is considered to be normal.
The total sleep time on Mondays was 29 minutes less than on Sundays. On Sundays, people were making effort to get enough sleep in anticipation of the start of a new week. On Mondays, working adults started the week fresh but came home exhausted. This resulted in a decrease in both the quantity and quality of sleep.
#Well-Aging #Well-Sleeping
Sleep patterns were different across different age groups. Sleep duration was shorter, and sleep quality was worse with aging. According to Asleep’s data, people aged 40 and over experienced a decrease in both time spent in bed and sleep duration compared to younger age groups. Sleep Efficiency (SE) was also decreased, probably due to hormonal changes in the body associated with aging. On the other hand, people under 20 years of age slept longer and their Sleep Efficiency was the highest among all age groups.

Persistent sleep deprivation is detrimental to your health. The incidence of chronic diseases, such as obesity and metabolic syndrome may increase due to lack of sleep. However, simply sleeping longer does not mean getting a ‘good sleep'. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule and a good sleep hygiene is important for your health.
In order to establish sustainable good sleeping habits, it is important to monitor sleep. With Asleep's highly accurate Airable mobile sleep tracker, it is convenient for anyone to track their sleep. This sleep tracking technology tells you sleep duration, sleep stages, breathing patterns and more. Why don’t you start building a healthy sleeping routine with Asleep’s technology?
